What is FIRPTA?

FIRPTA is the Foreign Investment in Real Property Tax Act of 1980.

FIRPTA requires withholding of 10% of the amount realized when a foreign person sells real estate located in the United States. This is withheld to insure that the tax will be paid on the sale.
