Ranking Methodology: Here is how the rank of the schools were determined. Initially, all of the schools were entered into a database. The State of Colorado provides various statistics about every school in the state at this website. I copied list form data from the state website, which included data such as school name, address, and grades served. I then accessed individual detailed school reports to obtain and enter school average ACT scores for 11th reading, writing, and math. I also obtained and entered a value known as “percent of students scoring proficient and advanced” for the school in 9th and 10th grade reading, writing, and math. I then created a combined average ACT score based on the school average ACT scores in reading, writing, and math. I also created a combined proficiency score based on the school average proficiency scores in reading, writing, and math. I then sorted the database by the combined average ACT score in order to produce the list of top ten schools. In several instances, the two combined average scores that I created overlap each other, indicating that sometimes the schools are roughly the same based on these two different scores. Some school accountability reports did not include school average ACT scores. If a school accountability report did not include a school average ACT score, that school was omitted from the top ten reports, and was omitted from the maps showing high schools in the Denver Metro area and the state of Colorado.
